Raise awareness

Active Communities
Active Communities is an exciting new VSO programme that supports enthusiastic returned volunteers, inspirational teachers and passionate supporters, to share their skills and experience by raising awareness of global issues in their communities.
You may be one of our long-standing supporters, you might have only joined us recently from an RV weekend or VSO's 50th anniversary celebrations, or this might be the first you have heard of Active Communities! However you get involved, you've told us that you want to play a part in increasing understanding of global issues and motivating others to take action in your communities, schools and workplaces.
VSO supporters all over the UK are already busy delivering talks, workshops and putting on exhibitions to raise awareness of the development issues that matter most to them, and we want to help you to use your knowledge and skills to involve others in these key issues. We all have something in common: together we all want to increase Global Awareness through Local Action!
To coincide with our fifth annual VSO Big Curry Night, we’d like you to work with us in a number of ways, to both raise funds for VSO and to raise awareness of a key challenge currently facing people throughout the world: the Global Food Shortage.
If you’re a teacher:
Our Active Communities team will be providing lots of information and ideas on how to bring the topic of the Global Food Shortage into your classroom and school practice. Start to think now about how you could incorporate this theme into next terms' schemes of work. Or maybe use a cross-curricular day to look at inter-related themes such as food shortages, nutrition, foods from around the world, and global citizenship. Or why not get the students involved in hosting their very own Big Curry event?
If you want to raise awareness in your local community:
VSO supporters come from all walks of life and have a wide variety of interests and contacts in their local communities! You can support Big Curry Night in a number of ways. Hosting your own curry night is a really great opportunity to help your friends and family find out more about the Global Food Shortage in a fun and informal way, whilst raising valuable funds for VSO. There’s a simple activity in the fundraising pack to help you and lots more ideas on our web pages.
Or you may want to use the theme of the Global Food Shortage to raise awareness in your local community group, youth club or faith group, or even run some activities at your workplace to encourage more ethically sourced products in your canteen! Again, there are loads of ideas on the website to get you started and make your activities fun and interactive.
